A Little Bit of Soul
A Fairy Tale Cottage with a Happy Ending |

| As Bob and Tyrene Johnston turned into their driveway off Red Farm Road in West Tisbury, their golden lab stood high on the backseat and exploded with barking. The dog was used to the open space of a farm on the mainland, and most of this three-acre property was trees. This wasn't dog country, a wild place or anything that would show up as remarkable on a geodesic map. But it was special, more than wood and rock and grass shaped into a human habitat. The Johnstons and their building crew had turned an otherwise nondescript cottage into a soul sanctuary. |
| "The cottage is not any one thing to people," says Bob. "It's set apart enough from the rest of the world as to enable people to get in touch with a part of themselves they most want to be in touch with." |
| Bright and airy, the cottage faces south harvesting light throughout the day. The master bedroom, foyer, and main living space combine nicely, their edges and window plan flowing from one shape to the next. But it is the roofline that brings the observer into the experience of the property. With an overhang on all sides bolstered throughout by custom carved rafters and outriggers, the roof curves slightly and leads the eye to a pleasantly shaped deck that seems less a protrusion and more a natural limb of the structure. |
